Martin admitted that adapting his Song of Ice and Fire series is no easy task. House Arryn supported Robert Baratheon in his rebellion against the Iron Throne, with Lord Jon Arryn becoming Robert's Hand of the King upon his victory.
King Artys Arryn, King of the Mountain and the Vale
Lysa flees King's Landing with Robin seeking the refuge of The Eyrie. When Catelyn receives the letter Robert is visiting Winterfell, the seat of House Stark. He is there to ask Eddard to replace Jon as Hand of the King.
House Position
King Robert is loath to bestow the title on a child, and so he takes the position away from House Arryn — the traditional holders of the title — and bestows it on Ser Jaime Lannister. This act angers Lady Lysa so greatly that she insists that her subjects call her son, Robert, the True Warden of the East. Catelyn's son Brandon Stark survives two assassination attempts. Lysa is attempting to isolate Robin from the rest of the Kingdom and use her role as regent to have the Vale Lords protect him. She is still breast-feeding him despite his age and her doting has spoiled him. Tyrion tricks Lysa into granting him a public hearing by claiming that he plans to confess.

Sworn Houses
According to legend, the house was founded by Ser Artys Arryn, the Winged Knight. He is said to have flown atop a giant falcon, landing on the topmost mountain of the Vale, and defeated the Griffin King, the last of the First Men Mountain Kings. Afterward, he took the Eyrie and became the first King of Mountain and Vale. His descendants continued to rule the Vale as Kings until the Targaryen conquest, and then as Lords Paramount of the Vale in the name of the Iron Throne. The banner of House Arryn (see above) is blue, the color of the sky, and features a falcon and the moon.
The house motto is "As High as Honor", signifying that like House Stark, they believe in upholding honor. After Bronn pushed Egen out of the Moon Door, Lysa Arryn furiously claims he "fought without honor" to which Bronn replies "no, he did" and points out of the Moon Door. Unfortunately, it can be seen that House Arryn lost their honor and pride during the War of the Five Kings under the corrupt leadership of Lysa Arryn. And sometimes, those powerful scenes are simply improvised. Considine talked about the moment toward the end of the first season when his character — who is ravaged by disease — takes the long, arduous walk to the throne. Jon Arryn's death ultimately lead to the War of the Five Kings, during which House Arryn under Jon's son, Robin Arryn, remained neutral.

Robert is afflicted with a disease that causes frequent seizures. His mother, Lady Lysa, rules the Vale as regent in his name. He is intellectually and physically stunted, and is not even weaned from his mother's breast. Arryn soldiers equip themselves much like the rest of the Valemen, with steel cuirasses, chainmail, and simple helmets, while their rounded shields represent the moon-and-falcon sigil. Their armor lacks ornamentation, in comparison with the Lannisters or the Tyrells, but is more functional than the Northmen's and the Rivermen's armor.

As Hand to the King, Lord Jon spoke with King Robert’s voice. This authority gave House Arryn more influence than it had ever had. Unfortunately, Lord Jon’s sudden death following his investigations into the parentage of Robert’s children reverses the house’s fortunes significantly and leaves the Vale without a strong ruler.
The Flower of the Mountain
When he then demanded that Eddard be turned over to the King's justice. The rebels forged an alliance with House Tully through marriage, with Eddard married to Catelyn Tully and the then-elderly Jon to the young Lady Lysa Tully. Tracing their origins back to the Andal Invasion, House Arryn ascended to rule the Vale when Artys Arryn defeated the Griffin King in the Battle of the Seven Stars, himself becoming the first King of Mountain and Vale. House Arryn continued to rule as kings over their kingdom until Aegon's Conquest. Jon and Lysa's weak and ill son, now Lord of the Vale after his father's death. Through Lysa and her sister Catelyn, he is also the maternal first cousin to the Stark children who are main POV characters.
Jon served the realm well for many years as Hand of the King. He died immediately prior to the events of the series, sparking King Robert's search for a replacement. Jon Arryn is survived by his wife Lysa and their six-year-old son, Robin Arryn. Jon was investigating the legitimacy of the children of Queen Cersei Lannister when he died. He found that they were not Robert's offspring by comparing their appearance to Robert's bastards based on the genetic preponderence for dark hair in House Baratheon. House Arryn rules the Vale that shares its name, a fertile land nestled within the great range of the Mountains of the Moon.
